VSS XC Race 3 – review

10-Feb-2008 Round 3 VSS 2007/2008, You Yangs

Club – Geelong Mountain Bike Club - http://gmbc.com.au/

150 riders

GMBC have really raised the bar for organizing, running and track, for the remainder of the VSS.

Not many clubs publish a map of the course prior to the race, even though it did require updating in the last days.

It was great to have each category sent off with a minute spacing. Especially when a number of the categories, like Masters men, are attracting good numbers. Each category being called up and roll call done.

Some might initially say that it was one for the power rider, but getting up the sharp climbs in the first third, and to descend at speed down much of the single track required a reasonable amount of technical skill. Those giant moguls were an excellent opportunity for the technical rider to put some time on the power rider.

Every visit to the You Yangs the GMBC provides a different course. Today’s course was possibly better than last season’s, in that the down hills were more suited to XC rather than attempting to get down a pure DH run. And safer for the less technical or less experienced rider.

It seems like a little thing, but when you are nobody, it really makes a difference that have you name called out by the timing tent as you pass by. Especially letting you know that there is one lap to go. Gives confidence that the timing people are on the ball.

Cans of coke for $1 and free snakes, can’t argue with that!

Over 170 photos on the GMBC website:

And some non-action shots of the faithful who stayed for the presentation, by Kathryn Feldmaier:

Does anyone else have photos from the race?

Results available on the GMBC website.

All in all, an excellent effort GMBC.
